Adjustable gastric banding is a form of restrictive weight loss surgery which is indicated for obese patients with a BMI (Body Mass Index) equal to 40 or more.

The gastric band is an inflatable silicone prosthetic device which is placed on the top portion of the stomach through laparoscopic surgery. This procedure creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach which fills with food quickly thus sending a message to the brain that the stomach is full, causing the patient to eat less and thus, there is weight loss over time. The procedure lasts for about 3 hours under general anesthesia. Post-operative pain is tolerable and can be relieved by medication. Length of hospital stay is 2 nights. Follow-up with the surgeon is done a week after the surgery to assess for immediate complications and for removal of sutures.

For the first month following surgery the patient is placed on a liquid diet. Another follow-up is done with the surgeon after a month for inflation of the gastric band and a normal diet is resumed. An observation period of 2-4 weeks is needed afterwards to assess for tolerance of the procedure, thus the patient is advised to stay in a place close to the hospital. Overall, about 2 months is required for the procedure and follow-up check-ups.
