Welcome to Dr. Julian Metter & Associates! Julian B. Metter, Ph.D. and Associates is a free standing clinic that has brought together the best in holistic, alternative and integrative resources from around the world. Our focus is to stimulate healing on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels to restore vitality and creative engagement in life. We combine innovative technologies, diverse clinical training and extensive experience to bring you effective interventions that expand you range of choices in health care decisions.
Our Focus Traditional medical treatments serve an important role in treating emergencies like sudden trauma from an accident. Once the acute crisis has passed however the disease oriented model has little to offer in mobilizing the body's restorative abilities or re engaging with life. This is even more evident with chronic health issues where traditional medicine is often baffled and ineffective in breaking the cycle of illness. Sadly traditional medicine is often influenced by economic forces that discard approaches that do not fit into a drug related approach.
Our center focuses on techniques that treat the person, and the unique "stuck points" in their life. We have implemented protocols that have demonstrated dramatic effectiveness with the most difficult health challenges and incorporated therapy approaches that utilize the body's own inner communication to guide the healing process. When this powerful and respectful approach is utilized clients experience an unfolding of their own healthy potentials that is often life changing.
Conditions & Treatments Current protocols and approaches that have been beneficial in the following conditions: • Lyme Disease • HIV/AIDS and Immune System Disorders • Autism Spectrum Disorders including ADD/ADHD • Head Injury and Post Stroke Recovery • Vitality Enhancement and Healthy Aging • Chronic Pain and Complicated Healing Issues • Substance Abuse and Dependence
Our Center Uses a Four Step Approach to Stimulating Health and Wellness • Careful functional and multileveled evaluation to identify "stuck points" that maintain health problems • Comprehensive interventions to create healthy conditions within the body and mobilize the healing response • Treatments to stimulate Neuroplasticity and restore healthy functioning • Mobilizing Inner Resources for Personal Transformation

Center Details
Our Center is a single structure located in a State College PA which is the main campus of the Pennsylvania State University System. The building is a modern "Cape Cod" design with a contemporary color scheme designed to bring different emotional energies into the process.
The Centers rooms include a large space containing the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber, HEG/Television and Exercise Equipment. This allows a creative synergy with respect to Oxygen based therapies and to combining HEG (biofeedback to increase cortical blood flow) with Oxygen and aerobic exercise.
A second room contains a vestibular motion system with magnetic field stimulator, Auditory Integration Training Equipment and Activated Air System. This allows for our integrated approach to auditory retraining and the development of deep relaxation states through sound/vibration and movement.
A third room contains a massage table, Ondamed, Low Level Laser, Lympholaser for Lymphatic Drainage, KMT, Thymus Stimulators and various smaller units like the SCENAR. This is our main body work room and has a beautiful blue peace tone. We often use this room for energy work with Rife Devices for those interested in natural approaches to healing with cancer.
A fourth room contains our biofeedback equipment, PAPIMI and various computerized assessment devices. We use this room for Alpha Theta training, Brain Mapping, MEAD energy analysis, Neurotherapy and Strannik Evaluations and Treatment Sessions. We also use this room for Interactive Metronome and PACE.
A fifth room is elegantly furnished in a Southwestern Motiff and is used for psychotherapeutic work and interviews.
Our Center is convenient to restaurants, shopping, swimming pools, parks, beautiful walking trails and lodging.

Business Profile Julian B. Metter Ph.D. and Associates By Donna Marcotte
”It’s all in your head” How many times have each of us heard "this when we feel something isn’t quite right with our health but couldn’t determine a cause for our illness or physical symptoms.
In recent years, scientists have been confirming what many of us feel instinctively – that our minds and bodies are interconnected. Keeping healthy involves tuning into ourselves and learning how our beliefs and feelings affect us. State College is home to an innovative practice that brings together one roof the best of mind/body therapies. On a recent visit to the office of Julian B. Metter Ph.D. and Associates I discovered a state of the art practice that blends the best of traditional approaches to psychotherapy with the latest mind/body technologies from around the world.
The goal of this unique practice is not simply to resolve a specific problem on either a physical or psychological level but to guide clients in a process of self discovery that can lead to comprehensive health and wellness.
Philosophy
Dr. Metter believes that each person possesses an underlying wisdom and adaptable energy that is capable of guiding a person back to health. Most problems in our life arise from the fact that we have learned to "turn off" this adaptive energy system and replace it with rigid defenses that develop out of fear and a need to escape from pain.
While building protective mechanisms in the form of muscle tension or emotional walls may seem to protect us in the short run it leads to a chronic state of "stuckness" which blocks the deeper expression of personal meaning and purpose in our lives. In this model, symptoms on either a physical or psychological level, are invitations to release the "stuckness" and restore our vibrant engagement with life.
Therapeutic Modalities: Enter the 21st Century
A visit to Dr. Metter’s practice feels a bit like walking unto the set for Star Trek. Amidst a warm Southwestern color scheme each room is filled with impressive looking equipment that is used to identify patterns of "stuckness" and begin the process of releasing them.
Dr. Metter demonstrated several of these approaches for me. The Ondamed is a Germany system that uses the process of "bio-resonance" to find blockages in the body’s energy flow and gently release them. Dr. Metter builds on the effect by using a Low Powered Laser and Cranio Sacral techniques all the while assessing the client’s responses by monitoring their pulse.
The experience was certainly relaxing – in involve lying on a table (fully clothed), deep breathing, light touch, soothing music and talk but also held some surprises. While lighting touching my feet Dr. Metter remarked, "there is something stuck in your right hip" and then confirmed this with the Ondamed.
Six months earlier, x rays could not identify a medical cause for the mysterious pain in my right hip. I also experienced emotional issues that seemed to surface by themselves. Both physical pain and emotional feelings wre handled warmly as a natural part oft eh process, giving me a firsthand understanding of how this therapy works.
Another system called Strannik, was developed in Russia over ten years of intensive research. This unusual computer program presents a client with a series short nature scene that introduce subtle colors into one’s memory. The program then creatively changing the colors and observes how the client attempts to "correct" the altered version. Remarkably the results of this simple evaluation produces a highly detailed analysis of physical and emotional conditions within the client and a customized computer program is developed to correct problem areas. The client watches the treatments—which consist of a series of pulsing colored lights, patterns and symbols typically about twenty minutes long—on his own computer at his own convenience.
For the cost of single diagnostic evaluation Strannik provides a cost-effective and convenient alternative to traditional one-on-one psychotherapy treatments. It is an interesting approach to problems like depression, anxiety, ADD and learning problems that are often treated with medication.
The center also features Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) which places a client in a pressurized chamber pumped with pure oxygen, enabling the body tissues to absorb enhanced levels of oxygen not possible when breathing oxygen at normal pressure. According to Dr. Metter, HBOT is useful for many conditions including post-stroke recovery, Multiple Sclerosis, migraine headaches, seizure disorders, Autism, Lyme Disease and AIDS.
A psychologist trained in traditional approaches to psychotherapy, Dr. Metter has always been interested in innovative therapies. In 1991, he relocated to State College where he developed a structured hypnotic approach to post-traumatic stress disorders in connection with a clinical research project at Pennsylvania State University.
