Orthodontic
Orthodontics is a specialty within dentistry that is dedicated to position the teeth to the correct place in the mouth, mostly by the lightly generated force of the wires, and utilizing braces and other elements that permit us to carry out dental movements.
Pediatric dentistry
When your child has cavities, spots on the teeth, malformations, even from the eruption of their first tooth, it is necessary to consult a dentist to prevent future problems.
Pediatric dentistry is specialized to treat children utilizing the modern techniques for the psychological and dental management for the CHILD.
Implants
A dental implant is an artificial structure in the form of screw, manufactured of titanium and inserted directly in the bone.
After the implantation, the appropriate dental prosthesis is created to replace missing teeth.
Therapeutic Laser
The therapeutic laser has two great functions:
The analgesic and the anti-inflammatory Effect.
For example, this technique is used in the rehabilitation and dentistry, mandible pain and inflammation.
Endodontics
Endodontics is the treatment that takes charge of rescuing teeth from extraction. There is nothing comparable to conserving your teeth.
With this treatment, the pulp is extracted from the tooth that is infected or dead, and it is replaced with a type of rubber and a germicidal cement, which permits conservation, avoiding extraction.
Surgeries
The wisdom teeth, are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth.
These four molars do not always have space; therefore, since they are very large, from time to time they could be trying to erupt in a bad direction due to lack of space, and this attempted eruption could move the other teeth. Also, by being the furthest back in the oral cavity, cleaning is complicated, making infections very common.
The general treatment is extraction of the third molars (wisdom teeth).
Prosthesis and Prosthodontics
Fixed Prothesis
A fixed prosthesis is cemented to the natural teeth previously eroded. These can be made of porcelain on metal or metal free. They are both cosmetic and functional. They cannot be removed by the patient. These can be individual crowns or bridges of three or more units supported by natural pillars.
Removable Prothesis
The removable prostheses are designed to be removed by the patient and can be either complete or partial. The complete removable prosthesis, commonly called plates or dentures, are utilized by patients with an absence of all teeth. A partial removable prosthesis is for patients with partially toothless arches with remaining bone structure (holding itself to teeth and the gums). These are manufactured from metal, acrylic, nylon (flexible) or combined.
Dentures
Dentures are false teeth that are done to replace the teeth that are lost. They can be complete or partial. Complete dentures cover the entire upper or lower jaw.

X-ray of the teeth
Definition:
An exam that implies the utilization of X-rays in the teeth and mouth. The X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation that can penetrate the body to form an image. The dense structures, like the teeth, appear white, the air appears black, and other structures, including the bone and the dentine appear with shadows of a gray color.
The forms in which the exam is carried out:
The exam is carried out in the dentist office. The most common procedure is the one that is carried out through a small film that is placed into the mouth behind a section of the teeth. The patient is asked to bite down to maintain positioning of the film. The x-ray machine is aimed toward that section of the teeth, and an image is taken. The majority of dental x-rays include 4 or more views of the teeth.
What you feel during the exam:
The X-rays themselves do not cause discomfort; nevertheless, some people find that biting the film causes some slight queasiness, which usually can be alleviated by breathing slowly and deeply through the nose.
Reasons to have an x-ray:
The x-rays of the teeth are used for diagnostic purposes to identify illnesses and dental traumas.
Sedative filling
This insulating and sedative technique is utilized in cases of first and second degree decay that has not affected the pulp chamber. Zinc oxide, eugenol, or calcium hydroxide can be used to medicate the tooth. This may or may not be combined with cotton, and is removed before final restoration is complete.
Dental Cleaning
What is Dental Prophylaxis?
Professional dental cleaning, also known as "dental prophylaxis", is the single most important procedure for preventing oral illnesses.
In Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry we strongly recommend periodic cleaning for prevention of future problems.
The belief that having a professional dental cleaning done occasionally is sufficient is FALSE. It is ideal to have this procedure done every 6 months. Although professional dental cleaning is the single most important procedure for prevention and can benefit us in many ways, this alone is not sufficient to fight and eradicate dental decay and/or other infections.
There are an extensive variety and forms to carry out a professional dental cleaning procedure. Your dentist will specify and advise the proper treatment plan for your oral health.
In Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry we have the most advanced apparatuses for such procedures, enabling us to carry out a professional dental cleaning that is comprised of 4 phases or quadrants, lasting a total of 45 minutes. This is not a painful procedure. Another advantage is that at Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry, we always have an available dentist, including Sundays, to perform dental cleanings.
Dental Extractions
What are dental extractions?
A dental extraction is a small surgical procedure, and with this, it is normal that after the procedure, some temporary changes in the mouth can occur, after which, after a few days returning to normal.
Recommendations:
- We will mention some simple features to continue to promote the scar formation, to prevent complications and to maintain comfort.
- The time of the anesthesia varies according to the type and quantity received, while your mouth is asleep should be careful not to bite your cheeks, lips, or tongue. This is of importance above all in younger patients, who should be monitored closely and not allowed to eat during this time and avoid biting themselves, causing injury to the above mentioned areas.
- The sensation of sleepiness will be alleviated in a few hours. To help the process of scar formation the professional places a sterile gauze for the purpose of controlling bleeding. To adequately control bleeding, keep this in place for a time frame of approximately 30 minutes.
- If the area bleeds after removing the gauze, replace with a new gauze and apply a moderate amount of pressure, closing the mouth firmly, for approximately 30 minutes.
- Keep in mind that a light amount of bleeding can occur at the extraction site until clotting can be formed.
- Keep in mind that the clot is an important part of the scar formation process. We should avoid any activity that can destroy it. This is why we recommend not rinsing the mouth vigorously and not drinking with straw, as this produces suction, possibly removing the clot and slowing down the scar formation. Try to limit physical activity for 24 hours after the extraction, as this will help reduce bleeding and assist with the scar formation.
- As for diet, you should drink plenty of liquids and eat nutritious, soft food. Avoid alcoholic beverages. You can begin to eat solids the following day or as soon as you can chew comfortably.
- When you rinse your mouth, do it gently with tepid water and bicarbonate. Rinsing after eating is important to keep food particles out of the extraction site.
By following these recommendations, we are sure that you will have a quick, pleasant recovery after this procedure.
And remember….
Prevention today, for better oral health tomorrow!!

Turn back the clock, recover your smile...
How it works?
This technique is not the same as bleaching the teeth, so to say, since the original color of your own teeth is not altered. Your tooth color is determined at birth by the tone of the nucleus of the tooth (dentine) and by the transparency and capacity of refraction of the light by the enamel. The color of the nucleus is not altered, nevertheless, with the time the enamel is stained due to substances such as tobacco, the lipstick, the coffee, the tea, the tomato, chemical pigments, sodas, use of medicines, etc. Consequently, dental whitening consists of eliminating of the enamel through chemical substances, all those particles that alter your original color. In general we believe that the most suitable procedures for each patient should be elected in function of the diagnosis, which is carried out after a dental exam and an adequate medical history.
Time of the processing
In a first visit some replicas of the mouth of the patient are carried out, from which some molds of transparent plastic will be created, that will adapt to the teeth and hold the whitening gel. Once the molds are created, the whitening is carried out in 2 phases: One phase in consultation and another at home:
1st PHASE:
The first session is carried by polishing the surface of the teeth to eliminate impurities. Next, application of a hydrogen peroxide gel is done at 35% for 30 minutes. This produces an initially important clarity.
2nd PHASE:
The same day the patient is given the plastic mold and a syringe of the peroxide gel carbamida (3-10%). From this moment the processing continues at home. The patient should apply the gel in the mold and place it on the teeth. It is recommended to continue this for 2 hours per day for 7-10 days. Upon finalizing the process, the condition and color of the teeth are checked, comparing by means of photographs and color chart results obtained. The process is completed with another polishing and application of fluoride to reinforce the enamel.
Efficacy:
Does it work? Is it for everyone?
The efficacy of the processing is proportional to the degree of tinting of the teeth that have been overshadowed along the years by substances. The processing results less efficient and even useless, in teeth overshadowed by intrinsic alterations, like consumption of tetracycline during the infancy, congenital hyperplasia of enamel, etc.
It is the professional who should determine if the patient is a candidate for dental whitening.
Risks
The American Dental Association (ADA), after a rigorous monitoring of various years, indicated that no damaging effects of the teeth, even with prolonged use, of these whitening gels. According to the experts, the only disadvantage is potentially sensitive gums during the first days.
Duration of Whitening
As for the duration of the whitening effect, this depends in great measure of the type of diet the patient continues after the process. Thus, in a smoking person, that drinks wine and coffee drinks regularly, the effect of the whitening will be lost much more rapidity. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), at the end of 5 years, about 20% of the cases studied had slightly lost the tone obtained.
Nevertheless, the first days after the processing one must continue a "white diet" that consists of taking food without colorants, like milk, natural yogurts, rice, paste, fish and to eliminate radically all the ones that "stain" as coffee, cola beverages, beet, chocolate, tomato, carrot. Once a year, maintenance applications of the gel should be applied for 2 or 3 days to optimize results.

Veneers
What is a veneer? Why they are used?
These fine sheets of porcelain, of approximately 0.3 to1 mm in thickness, that are placed covering all surface of the teeth. They are bonded the tooth with a special adhesive. The union is so strong that once placed they cannot be removed unless the veneer is broken. They are used fundamentally to disguise abnormalities of the color of the teeth that cannot be treated by means of the conventional whitening. Also they are used to dissemble alterations in the size or forms of teeth, creating better esthetics.
Their main advantage is the power of adhesion, resistance to abrasion and smoothness. Once they are cemented the patient can eat with normality. Many public figures use this technique to obtain an attractive smile.
Types of veneers: advantages and disadvantages.
Porcelain: Its main advantage is the power of adhesion, resistance to abrasion and smoothness. They do not erode with time or lose shine, and they retain their color. Once cemented, the patient can eat normally. Many personalities of the public figure use this technique to obtain an attractive smile. The main disadvantage is that from time to time this does slightly reduce the enamel. Also, they are more expensive and require at least 2 sessions.
Technical step by step...
It is simple. The tooth or teeth that be going to receive the veneer is lowered lightly in the front, from 0.3 - 0.5 mm. After preparation, a measurement is taken and impression with silicone, which will be sent to the laboratory where specialized technicians will create the veneer by means of a modern system of injection of porcelain. Once the veneer is created, the test of adaptation is carried out, then proceeding to placement of a special adhesive. The complete process takes a few days.
Who is a candidate for veneers?
Not all the patients are candidates for porcelain veneers. In cases of severe crowding or defects, this process is contraindicated. It is also not recommended in patients with bruxism (grinding teeth). In any case is always the dental Surgeon who has to determine through a clinical exam if the patient is or is not an ideal candidate for veneers. Nevertheless, the alternative exists of complete porcelain crowns.
Duration
Depending on the habits of the patient, the average duration is about12 years. From time to time, when the patient suffers a strong impact in the mouth or he bites something hard, some veneers can be fractured or decemented. In case of decementation, if the veneer is intact, it can be recemented. If it has broken, it must be replaced.
Risks
This procedure has almost no risks. If the veneer adapts badly, it is simply recemented. Once they have been placed, the patient is able to eat and speak normally but should avoid biting into excessively hard things with the treated teeth.
Post
The restoration of a tooth which has had endodontic treatment many times needs a post, whose purpose is to provide a solid base for placement of a crown and protecting what remains of the tooth structure and substitutes lacking dental structure.
Great variety of prefabricated posts of different materials exists. However, in recent years, those with the greatest acceptance are fiberglass posts since its module of elasticity is similar to that of the dentine, they are white (translucent or opaque), its translucence permits the broadcast of the light for the correct polymerization of the cements with which they adhere to the tooth; they can be found commercially in different forms (smooth, striated, parallel, conical, hybrid, assets, passive, stiff, flexible), and they are compatible with the composed resin that are employed for the reconstruction of base. If necessary, they can be easily removed.
There are also screwed posts, depending on the treatment plan of each patient.
Prothesis
Dentures
The dentures are false teeth that are done to replace the teeth that are lost. They can be complete or partial. The complete denture covers the dental upper or lower jaw.
Crowns and Bridges
What are crowns and bridges?
Crowns and the majority of the bridges are prostheses that are placed in a fixed way. As opposed to removable prostheses that can be removed to clean daily, the crowns and bridges are cemented to the teeth or existing implant, and only THEIR DENTIST can extract them.
How do crowns function?
A crown is utilized to cover completely a destroyed tooth. Also, it can be utilized to improve the aspect, the form or the alignment of the tooth. A crown can also be placed on an implant to achieve the form and functional structure of a tooth. It is possible to create porcelain crows that match the color or your natural teeth. Other materials include the gold and acrylic, metallic alloys, and ceramics. The alloys used are more resistant than porcelain, and they are recommended for the back teeth. In some occasions, porcelain is cemented to the external face of a metallic crown, offering an esthetically pleasant and strong restoration.
Your doctor in Dental Maya will recommend crowns for:
- Replacing large fillings with insufficient remaining tooth structure.
- Avoiding fracturing a weakened tooth.
- Repairing a fractured tooth.
- Placing a bridge.
- Covering a dental implant.
- Covering an discolored or deformed tooth.
- Covering a tooth that treated with conduit radicular.
How do bridges function?
If you are missing one or more teeth, the dental surgeon will recommend a bridge. With time, the teeth among the empty free spaces rotate and shift, which causes an inappropriate bite. The imbalance caused by the missing teeth can also produce illness of the gums and inconveniences of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
The bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth, and they occupy the space left by the same. The dental surgeon cements the bridges to the natural teeth or to the implants that surround the empty space. These teeth, called pillars, serve as an anchor for the bridge. Just like with the crowns, various materials for the bridges exist. The dental surgeon can help to decide which to utilize, according to the location of the tooth or teeth that are missing, the function, the cosmetics, and the cost. The color of porcelain bridges are created to match your natural teeth.
