Snehana and Swedana ( external application of oil and fomentation)
Vata, the strongest among Tridoshas, will not vitiate in that body which has been subjected to Snehana and Swedana
The great Astavaidya tradition of Kerala has developed special procedures of applying Snehana and Swedana which include Abhyanga(oil massage), Kayaseka(pouring the oil on the body), Shirodhara(pouring the oil on the head), Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda (fomentation using boluses of rice cooked in milk and decoction of Cida cardifolia) etc.
The procedure for each person will be decided after examining the factors like strength, tolerance to heat and cold, climate etc. The Snehana and Swedana empowers you with great strength, tolerability, better state of digestion and metabolism enhanced function of sense organs and increased immunity.
Panchakarma ( the five purificatory procedures)
Ahalia assures you of classical Panchakarma chikitsa under strict controlled regimen.
Your eligibility to undergo any Panchakarma will be decided by the physician after a detailed examination.
This treatment will be given at three stages
Poorvakarma (preparatory procedure) - This includes internal administration of Sneha(unctuous material like ghee) followed by fomentation. The total duration may extend between 5-7 days. .External application of Snehana, as mentioned above may be advocated in some conditions instead of internal administration.
Pradhana karma (main procedure) - The nature of the procedure will be fixed in advance. Vamana (emesis) and Virechana(purgation) are conducted in a single day; Vastis(medicated enemas) will be given in numbers of 8/15/30. Nasya (nasal instillation of medicine) is performed for minimum 7 days either individually or in combination with Snehana and Swedana treatments.
Paschat karma( post panchakarma procedure) - This consists of various procedures like Dhoomapana (medicated smoking ) etc. as well as a special diet regimen called Samsarjana karma. Ahalia emphasis upon the fact that there is no shortcut method to undergo Panchakarma.
Rasayana Chikitsa ( Rejuvenation therapy)
All the methods coming under the health promoting scheme indeed are meant for rejuvenating the body. Apart from these, Ayurveda has gifted the mankind with another concept called Rasayna Chikitsa wherein special medicines, either single or in combination will be administered to eligible persons who have undergone mandatory purification. Abhyangam (Oil massage)
"Abhyanga is the procedure where the body is massaged using a medicated oil all over the body. This imparts oleation, complexion, stability, destroys fatigue and disturbances due to vata dosha.
The treatment is done in 7 postures:

- Lying - Supine position

Kaya Seka (Pizhichil)
Kaya Seka is the process in which the body is made to perspire by means of pouring of warm medicated oil in a specific manner.
After performing certain sacred rites, the patient is allowed to sit in the wooden basin (Taila Droni) and the medicated oil is applied first to the head as well as on his body by the attendants. A piece of clean cloth is then tied across the forehead, to prevent the oil on the head flowing down to the face and eyes.
Four attendants should sit, two on each side of the basin to carry out the process. The warm oil is poured on the patients body by dipping pieces of clean cloth in the warm oil and squeezing the cloth over the body with the right hand .The oil is to be poured at a medium speed--neither too quickly nor too slowly--and from a moderate height.
The attendants while applying the oil in the above manner, should at the same time massage the body of the patient gently with their left hands. The heat of the oil must be chequed frequently by the attendants to ensure that the patient is comfortable during the procedure. The direction of massage should always be downwards. The procedure must be carried out in all the seven postures(already mentioned under heading Abhyangam).
Course of Treatment:-Treatment may be done once in two days or daily for 7/14/21 days.

Dhara (Shirodhara)
Sirodhara or Dhara is otherwise known as Sirasekam. It is one of the many special types of treatment widely practiced in Malabar(Northern Kerala) for diseases of the head.
It is of 3 types
- Ksheeradhara (Dhara with medicated milk)
- Takradhara (Dhara with medicated butter milk).
- Tailadhara (Dhara with medicated oil)
Sirodhara is the process in which medicated oil ,milk ,buttermilk is poured in a continuous stream on the forehead in a specific manner.
The patient is made to lie down in the wooden basin (Taila-Droni), after anointing his head and body with suitable medicated oils .His head should rest in a slightly elevated position, preferably on a pillow.
Two attendants are needed for this treatment. One attendant controls the movement of dharapatra (vessel containing the medicine) and the flow of oil. The other one collects the oil that falls from patients head. The vessel is refilled with this oil and the procedure will be continued for 30-40 minutes.
Course of Treatment:- 7 to 14 days
Time Duration:- One and half hour
Same procedure is following Takradhara and Ksheeradhara treatment.

Sirovasthi
Shirovasthi is the procedure where in the medicated oil is retained on the head for a prescribed period. For this purpose a bandage is run round the head of the patient over the forehead going over the ears and eye brows .A clean cloth is used for bandaging and both sides of bandaging is smeared with a paste of black-gram powder prepared with hot water. Over this placed twelve finger high cap- like contraption without top, made of moderately flexible skin of ox or buffalo freed of hairs. This cap must fit perfectly well round the head of the patient with the smooth side of the skin for its inside. And another cloth is wound over the first to fix the skin cap in position and to prevent the oil from leaking out at the junctions.
The prescribed medicated oil is warmed to body temperature and poured into this cap This process is done with the patient sitting on a comfortable chair.
Thus the oil can be retained until the patient develops discharge from the nose and mouth or for a maximum 45 minutes. Oil is then removed from the head by bending the head slightly and making a small opening in the bandage .The palms, soles, shoulders, ears. .etc. must be made warm by gentle rubbing. Fresh oil is applied on the body and head and made to bath.

Njavarakizhi
Njavarakizhi is one of traditional treatment forms of Astavaidya tradition in Kerala .It is a procedure by which the whole body or any specific part thereof is made to perspire ,by the application of certain medicinal drugs with Njavara(special variety of rice that grows in 60 days.) rice puddings externally in the form of bolluses tied up in a muslin bag.
Treatment (massage) is started by application of oil to the head and the body and a piece of cloth is tied a round the head. Four attenders, two on each side of the patient Massaged one by the prepared boluses with the patient sitting in the wooden basin (Taila-Droni)and continued the process in 7 postures as already described.
When massaging is finished, all the bollus bags are opened out and the pudding remaining is taken and applied to the body of the patient and rubbed by the hands. Five minutes after the pudding sticking to the body is removed by scrapping with edge of leaves of coconut palm. Oil on the head is removed by gentle wiping with a dry cloth. Patient is given bath after some time.

Leaves of plants which work against vata dosha are collected, made into small pieces and processed with medicines like saindhava lavana methika, medicated oil etc. These are covered in cloth pieces in the form of boluses and are made hot frequently throughout the procedure.
The person is made to sit on the droni (special table for massage) and first applied medicated oil all over the body. Fomentation and simultaneous massage is given in all the seven positions (refer Abhyangam). Person is given hot water bath after the procedure.
Course of the treatment: 7 days/14 days/21 days

Limes are made into small pieces and then processed with various medicines like Shatapuspa etc. These are covered in cloth pieces in the form of boluses and are made hot frequently throughout the procedure.
The person is made to sit on the droni (special table for massage) and first applied medicated oil all over the body. Fomentation and simultaneous massage is given in all seven positions (refer Abhyangam). Person is given hot water bath after the procedure.
Course of treatment: 7 days/14 days/21 days

- Acute stiffness of the neck

Podikizhi (Choorna Sweda)
This is a type of Swedana Chikitsa (fomentation) wherein medicated powders are made into poultice and used for giving fomentation.
Drugs like vacha, sarshapam, jatamamsi etc. are made into fine powder, fried and tied in cloth pieces in the form of boluses. These are made hot frequently throughout the procedure.
The person is made to sit on the droni(special table for massage). He is then given fomentation with simultaneous massage using this poultice. Application of medicated oil prior to fomentation is not mandatory here. Person is given hot water bath after the procedure.
Course of the treatment: 7 days/14 days/21 days

Udwarthanam (Dry Massage)
Udwarthandm is the treatment where in the massage is done with powders of medicines The powder is rubbed forcibly on the body in upward direction. Other procedures are same as the Uzchil, described earlier.

Njavarathepu
This is a special type of treatment prevalent in Malabar (northern Kerala)for the diseases of the nervous system.In this procedure the whole body or any particular part, is made to perspire by means of the application of a kind of Payasa or Pudding, specially prepared for the purpose with the Njavara rice ,milk and decoction of Bala(sida rhombifolia).
The procedure is similar to the Njavarakizhi except that the application of pudding id done directly here where as boluses are used in case of the latter.
Course of Treatment: 7/14/21 days

Thalapothichil (application of medicated paste on the head)
This is a special procedure widely practiced in Kerala. Drugs like amla etc. are cooked in medicated liquids like buttermilk etc. and made into fine paste.
Person must shave his head clean prior to this procedure. He is seated comfortably and given mild massage on the head with any suitable medicated oil. The paste is then applied evenly all over the head and covered first with leaf of banana and then with a cloth. A small hole is made in the centre of the covering and medicated oil is kept there. The oil and the paste is removed after 30 minutes and he is given another mild massage on the head.
Course of the treatment: 7 days/14 days/21 days

Kativasthi
In this procedure specially prepared warm medicated oil is placed on the back region(Lumbar) for a specific time

Urovasthi
In this procedure, specially prepared warm medicated oil is placed on the chest for a specific time.

Tarpana (application and retention of medicated ghee on the eyes)
Tarpana is widely used for various conditions of the eyes. The person is made to lie down comfortably and asked to close his eyes. Black gram paste is then applied around the eyes in the shape of a circular well. The sides are pasted properly to prevent any leakage of ghee. Medicated ghee which is heated and made cold is poured slowly on the closed eyes. The quantity must be sufficient to cover the eyelids completely. He is then asked to open the eyes slowly and to move them around. The ghee is retained for 5 minutes on the first day and then the time is increased. A small hole is made at the sides of the well for removing the ghee.

Karkitaka Chikitsa
Varsha rutu or the monsoon is the time when all the three body humours vitiate in the body. They may give rise to serious disorders if not destroyed in the budding stage itself. .Karkataka Chikitsa is aimed at making body free from the vitiated doshas and enhancing the immunity. It includes internal and external administration of medicines with adequate dietic regimen.

Dr.Arathi. P.S. is graduated from Govt. College of Indian Medicine, Mysore, Karnataka in 1990. She got her M.D (Ayurveda) in Kayachikitsa from Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in 1994.
Dr.Arathi is a practitioner as well as an academician. She has worked as clinical lecturer in the Department of Kayachikitsa at Ayurveda College, Coimbatore from 1993 to 1999. She later served that institution as principal from 1999 to 2003. She has worked as professor, Department of Roga Vijnana & Vikruthi Vijnana at Santhigiri Ayurveda Medical College, Palakkad, Kerala. Dr.Arathi has also worked in other positions like the member of senate, The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Dr. Surekha Pai, M D
Dr. Surekha Pai graduated and received M.D (Ayurveda) in Kayachikitsa from S.D.M College of Ayurveda, Udupi, Karnataka in 2003.
Dr. Surekha Pai has worked as lecturer in the Department of Kayachikitsa at S.D.M College of Ayurveda, Udupi and as Consultant at S.D.M Ayurveda Hospital Mangalore, Karnataka from 2004-2007. She has also worked as lecturer in Department of Sareera, Parasssinikadavu Ayurveda Medical College, Kannur from 2003 to 2004.

Taken Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery Degree from Govt.Ayurveda College,Kannur,Kerala in 1999. He has under gone his internship training at Vaidyaratinam P.S. Varrier Ayurveda college Hospital, Kottakkal.
Dr.Kunhahamad is a well known consultant Ayurvedic physician. He has a solid practicing experience of seven years in the Ayurvedic field. Out of this he has worked 3 and half years in the Middle East and remaining 3 and half years in Ayurvedic hospitals in Kerala.
Dr.Kunhahamad has attended several seminars and conferences in Middle East and Kerala. He is well experienced in managing Ayurvedic treatments like Snehapana, Swedana, different types of Kizhies like Podikizhi, Elakizhi, Navara Kizhi, dharas and Panchakarma therapies like Nasya, vamana,Virechana,Vasthi and Raktha Moksha. Dr.Anjali Haridas is graduated from Govt. Ayurvedic College, Bangalore, and Karnataka in 2000. Dr.Anjali Haridas is a general practitioner having worked in different places. She has rendered medical services in NSS camps in rural districts of Karnataka.
Dr.Anjali Haridas worked as a private practitioner at Nagarjuna Ayurvedic Clinic, Bangalore, Karnataka. Later she worked as a visiting consultant at Ayuskara Ayurveda Hospital, Palakkad, Kerala. Dr.Anjali Haridas has got reputation for treating patients with simplified effective therapies for quicker and better relief especially in cases of disc lesion, stress relate hypertension, diabetic neuropathy etc

Dr. Sajith M. graduated form S.D.M College of Ayurveda, Hassan, Karnataka in 1998. He received his M.S.(Ayurveda) in Shalya Tantra from S.D.M College of Ayurveda, Udupi, Karnataka in 2002.
Dr. Sajith has worked as Ayurveda Director for Health Rehabilitation Centre at Pristina, Kosova under United Nations Interim Administration Mission. Alongside, he also took part in research of Rotational Filed Quantum Magnetic Resonance (RFQMR), Cytotron in the treatment of Osteo arthritis and cancer for 6 months in 2007. He has done research as part of Post Graduate studies titled “Effect of Agnikarma in Katishula(Low Back Ache)”.
Dr. Sajith has worked as lecturer in the Department of Shalya Tantra at S.D.M College of Ayurveda, Udupi and as R.M.O at S.D.M Ayurveda Hospital, Mangalore, Karnataka from 2004 and 2007. He has worked as H.O.D in charge, Department of Sareera Rachana, Parassinikadavu Ayurveda Medical College, Kannur and specialist Ano-rectal Consultant from 2003 to 2004.
Dr. Sajith has presented scientific papers in National and International Seminars on Topics like “Post Herpetic Neuralgia” “Agnikarma in Katishula” etc.
Dr. Sajith has expertise in the treatment of Ano-rectal disorders such as Piles, Fistula, Fissure etc through surgical and Para-surgical procedures such as Agnikarma, Kshara Sutra, Jalouka etc. He is well versed in the management of Spinal and Joint diseases.

Dr. Ajesh M Pillai obtained his BAMS degree from Tripunitara Ayurvedic College.
After passing out he joined SD pharmacy and practiced there for some time.
He then worked at Somatheeram Ayurvedic resorts and after got interested in Ano-rectal diseases and underwent training in Ksharasutra and IRC under the eminent surgeon Dr. Gopalakrishnan M.S at Karunagapally.
He worked in the Ano-rectal department of Jeevaram Hospital, Harippad for three and half years.
Dr. Ajesh Pillai is adapt in the use of infra red regulator and cryo surgery and rubber band ligation of Hemorrhoids.
Dr. Ajesh Pillai is at present working as a General Practitioner at Ahalia Ayurvedic Hospital.

Dr.Reshma.K.T is graduated from V.P.S.V Ayurveda College Kottakkal in 2007 with excellent academic record. She worked as assistant physician at GVS Vaidyasala, Tirur and practiced as visiting doctor in various clinics.
Dr. Reshma has worked in various projects works like ' Soft drinks - Effects on human body ' and on ' Maharasas '
Dr.Reshma is well versed in Panchakarmas and in the treatment of gynecological diseases. She has a good experience in yoga therapy too.

Dr. Upendran P. hails from a family of renowned Traditional Ayurveda Vaidayas. He studied at Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam College at Shornur in the year 1989 and got D.A.M. from Govt.of Kerala. He has got vast experience in the manufacturing of Ayurveda medicines. He has involved in many newer drug formulations during his tenure as Factory In charge, Arya Vaidya Pharmacy, unit II at Thennilapuaram, Palakkad. He has also worked as Production –in- charge at Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam at Shornur, Palakkad.

Dr. Satheesh.k
Dr. Satheesh.K is graduated from Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier’s Ayurveda College, Kottakkal, Kerala in 2002. He got his M.D. (Ayurveda) in Manasa Roga from the same college in 2007.
Dr. Satheesh has worked as Deputy Physician in Arya vaidya sala Hospital, Kottakkal for more than one year. He gained tremendous experience from there in managing general as well as psychiatric patients. Along with this he has worked as consultant physician in various clinics.
Dr. Satheesh has presented various scientific papers in national as well as international seminars. He attended various training programmes and workshops during his academic career.
He has done research as part of his Postgraduate studies titled ‘A Study on the effect of Triphala Takradhara in Chronic Schizophrenia with special reference to Negative symptoms“. The study was done at VPSV Ayurveda College, Kottakkkal and Govt. Ayurvedic Mental Hospital, Kottakkal.

Dr.Sreejith M.S. BAMS
Dr.Sreejith M.S. BAMS obtained his BAMS degree from Sri. Jayendra Saraswathi Ayurveda College, Chennai.
He hails from a family of traditional Ayurvedic Vaidyas who have specialized in the treatments of eye ailments. Dr. Sreejith is trained from the tutelage of his paternal uncle Dr. Somasundaram DAM at ‘Mukkadakkatt Netra Chikitsalayam’
Dr.Sreejith is well versed in the in the management of all sorts of eye diseases, both degenerative and infectious. He conducts treatments like Aschyotana, Anjana, Akshi seka, Tharpana, Putapaka, Lekhana, etc effectively using medicines mentioned both in Ayurvedic classics and traditional system.
He is presently working in the department of Eye Clinic at Ahalia Ayurvedic Hospital.
