Ayurvedic Cleansing and Detoxification

Overview
Because of the effects of pollution and bad eating, our body often retains toxins that deplete energy levels, cause stress and decrease efficiency of body functions. A cleansing and detoxification treatment known as Ayurvedic Panchakarma works to get rid of harmful toxins that cause an imbalance between the mind, body and spirit.

Panchakarma is a word that means Five Procedures, created with the purpose of ridding the body of impurities. Not everyone needs to undergo all five procedures, but it will be up to the discretion of the Ayurveda specialist to determine which procedures might be most beneficial and appropriate for each patient. Ayurveda is a lifestyle, not an alternative medicine, so it is important to make changes in daily life if necessary to promote and maintain a more stress-free approach to life.

How does Cleansing and Detoxification work?
Ayurvedic Panchakarma most commonly takes place in a relaxing, retreat-like environment and usually lasts about 5 to 8 days. During this time period, specialists will work with an individual to restore the body’s balance to its natural state. One to two weeks before arrival, a phone consultation helps prepare the patient for their detoxification and cleansing treatment. In addition to the phone consultation, a specialist might require a home cleansing (that lasts two weeks) prior to arrival in order to initiate positive changes to diet and daily routine before the treatment begins. A herbal cleansing might also be suggested in order to prepare the body for the Ayurvedic process.

At the retreat, a presentation and overview of the program is offered to the patient. An Ayurvedic specialist will determine what imbalances the patient may be experiencing between mind or body and then design a specific plan that meets the needs of that individual. Each patient has their own custom treatment designed so that energy imbalances are addressed and corrected.

Body treatments involved include full body herbal oil massages, massages with herbal paste, sweating sessions, and shirodhara, which is warm oil applied to the forehead in a constant, soothing stream. Self-administered medicated enemas are also given to cleanse the body of toxins. Food consumed during an Ayurvedic Cleansing and Detoxification program is custom-prepared to enhance the cleansing process. During the retreat, patients are encouraged to relax and rest, as well as partake in gentle mind-body exercises like Yoga and Meditation sessions.

What are the Benefits of Ayurvedic Detox Treatments?
Undergoing a cleanse works to rid the body of impurities harmful to the body and mind. Patients who undergo an Ayurvedic treatment benefit from both internal cleansing and relaxation techniques that promote health, well-being and an increase of energy. Internal cleansing also helps the organs to work to their fullest capacity, reducing sluggishness and toxin buildup.

Cost of Ayurvedic Cleansing and Detoxification Procedures
In the United States, approximate costs for Panchakarma range about $1,350 for a three-day stay within a retreat facility. Costs include rooms, food and treatments, but prices increase depending on the amount of time a patient wishes to stay. However, medical travelers to India may benefit from lower costs, which are approximately $395 for a 4-day retreat. For example, a full week stay in Sri Lanka costs approximately $620.

Choosing an Ayurvedic Treatment Center
When looking for an Ayurvedic retreat, find one that is reputable. Ask about experience and ask to inspect the facilities before making a choice. Facilities should be clean and sterile. Highly qualified and experiences professionals should be on site and all Ayurvedic medicines should be pure and high quality in nature. As with any other treatment center, take the time to research certification or registration requirements prior to choosing a specific facility or individual for your Ayurvedic treatments.
