An Overview of Dentures

Used to replace missing teeth, dentures have come a long way in comfort and appearance. There are typically two styles, complete dentures for those who have no teeth, and a partial denture or an over-denture for those individuals who are only missing a few teeth.

Tooth loss results from a variety of reason, the most common from tooth decay, injury to the teeth and jaw, or disease. Individuals choose dentures for many reasons, some being cosmetic but it is important to replace the teeth that are missing for ease of eating, as well as preventing further damage to the remaining teeth that can begin to shift. A physical appearance is also affected by the lack of teeth, since the facial features will sag around the mouth causing an aged look.

Common Types of Denture Treatments

  • Standard dentures
  • Immediate dentures (aka Temporary dentures)
  • Cu-Sil dentures
  • Overdentures
  • Implant retained dentures

Standard dentures are made for individuals already missing all their teeth and rely on fixatives or suction to fit into and stay in place. Immediate dentures, also commonly known as temporary dentures are made before any teeth are extracted. False teeth are affixed into the location where teeth have been extracted. In many cases, such dentures become a permanent fixture for the recipient. However, in many cases, patients must have this type of denture relined within about 4 to 6 months.

Cu-Sil dentures are created to allow remaining teeth to help secure dentures in place. Cu-Sil dentures come with holes that accept the placement of natural remaining teeth. However, this type of denture is considered for 'transitional' circumstances toward full or implanted dentures. Overdentures are removable false teeth placed over existing teeth (or remnants of teeth). Overdentures are commonly found in individuals who have undergone a root canal. Implant retained dentures are screwed into place in the jawbone.

Dentures of any type may require multiple visits to evaluate the need and style, create, fit and place the final dentures. On the first visit, the dentist will examine gum and bone structure to determine what the appropriate plan is for optimal results. In some cases, oral surgery is needed to correct or alter jawbones and shape for the ideal fit of the dentures and may require additional visits. Some teeth might also need to be extracted for ideal fit of dentures, depending on what teeth are missing.

After the dentist has determined the proper fit and style of dentures, they will make a mold of the patient's gums, so that the new dentures will fit properly to every part of the gum in comfort. Once the dentures are made, they are inserted and checked by the dentist to fit for optimal comfort and function

Who Benefits from Dentures?
Any individual suffering from missing, diseased or damaged teeth may benefit from partial or complete dentures to restore the individual's self-confidence and appearance. Dentures not only alter physical appearance in a positive way, but also allow for proper alignment and function when eating and chewing.

What do Dentures Cost?
No matter where a denture procedure is done, several costs are involved in denture treatments. Fabrication or creation of dentures, oral surgery, tooth extraction, medications, visits and materials have varying costs depending on the surgeon and location. In the United States, most denture procedures range from $300-$8,000. In the case of those who require implants for an entire arch or the full mouth, costs may reach $15,000 or more. In Costa Rica, dentures may cost $150-$400 and in Thailand, around $400-$900.

Choosing a Dentist
Choosing an ideal dentist is important for any denture procedure. Before receiving dentures, individuals should look into the experience and training of a particular dentist before committing to the procedure. While general dentists undergo training for many issues on the teeth, a prosthodontist who performs dental procedures receives additional training in restorative dentistry. Always make sure your dentist is trained and certified in his or her state or country of origin, as well as currently certified and trained in the latest dental procedures and techniques.
