Obesity Bariatric Surgery in Mexico: Bipartition

Bipartition surgery (also known as single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy, or SADI-S) is a bariatric surgery that combines two main strategies for weight loss: reducing the stomach size and rerouting the intestines. It is considered an alternative to the more common gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy.

Here’s how it works:

1. Sleeve Gastrectomy: A portion of the stomach is removed, creating a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach. This limits the amount of food that can be eaten and helps control hunger.

2. Intestinal Bipartition: The small intestine is rerouted, but unlike a traditional bypass, it’s not completely disconnected. Instead, it is divided so that food travels through both the shortened digestive tract and the normal intestine. This allows for less malabsorption of nutrients compared to a traditional gastric bypass, while still limiting the absorption of calories, promoting weight loss.

The goal of bipartition surgery is to offer the benefits of both gastric restriction (by reducing stomach size) and moderate malabsorption (by bypassing part of the intestines), leading to effective weight loss without the significant nutritional deficiencies sometimes associated with more extreme malabsorption procedures like a full gastric bypass.

Advantages:
- Reduces both food intake and calorie absorption.
- May have fewer nutritional complications compared to traditional bypass surgery.
- Can be effective for patients with high BMIs or metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes.

Bipartition surgery is less common than traditional bariatric surgeries but can be an option for patients needing significant weight loss or seeking alternatives to bypass or sleeve surgeries.
