Bypass

A **gastric bypass** (Roux-en-Y) is a type of bariatric surgery used to help patients lose weight when other methods, like diet and exercise, have not been successful. In this procedure, the stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a larger lower section. The small pouch, about the size of an egg, limits the amount of food a person can eat.

Additionally, part of the small intestine is bypassed, which reduces the absorption of calories and nutrients. The rerouted small intestine is connected to the small stomach pouch, so food skips part of the digestive system, leading to further weight loss. This combination of reduced food intake and nutrient absorption helps patients lose weight effectively.

Gastric bypass is typically recommended for individuals with a BMI of 40 or higher, or those with a BMI of 35 or higher who have serious health conditions related to obesity, such as diabetes or heart disease. The procedure is permanent and can result in significant long-term weight loss, but it also requires lifelong lifestyle changes, including dietary adjustments and supplements to compensate for reduced nutrient absorption. 

It is one of the most common and effective bariatric surgeries, but as with any surgery, it carries risks and potential complications, such as nutritional deficiencies, dumping syndrome (rapid gastric emptying), or weight regain if lifestyle changes aren't followed.
