Southeast Georgia Health System (SGHS) is a community hospital accredited by the Joint Commission and further by the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer. New World Medical Network uses this facility to provide a cutting-edge technology for cancer treatment using a machine called the Cyberknife®. This treatment for soft-tissue cancers found in the abdomen, brain, liver, lungs, prostate and uterus is performed without invasive surgery. The machine uses computer guided and highly focused radiation beams to locate and destroy cancer cells. The advantage to the patient is a high incidence of tumor eradication (95+%) and the procedures are done without the use of chemotherapy which makes the treatment very easy on the health of the patient. Knee/Shoulder/Hip Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure where a small camera, attached to a probe (the arthroscope) is inserted into the knee, shoulder or hip through a small opening made by the surgeon. With this scope, the surgeon can see inside to diagnose problems and also make repairs to the components of the joint.

Cyberknife Cancer Care

CyberKnife® is a non-invasive solution for patients who have inoperable or surgically complex tumors, or who may be looking for an alternative to surgery. The process is most successful when the cancer is detected in its early stages. The CyberKnife system enables radiation oncologists to deliver high doses of radiation with pinpoint accuracy to a broad range of tumors throughout the body and with minimal compromise to general health.

Gall Bladder Removal 

A Gall Bladder Removal (a laparoscopic cholecystectomy) is a minimally invasive procedure to remove the gallbladder. This often results when the gallbladder fills up with gallstones (hard substances usually caused by cholesterol from rich or fatty foods). A laparoscope (a small tube with a camera on the end) is inserted through small surgical openings and tools on the end of the tube allow the surgeon to remove the organ.

Hysterectomy

A Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a woman’s uterus, often performed because signs of cancer have appeared. This procedure can be performed with a variety of techniques. An open procedure is one where the physician makes an incision several inches long and works with the abdomen open. This procedure can also be performed laparoscopically and in some cases using robotic surgery equipment.

Knee- ACL Repair

Many people suffer from a tear(s) in their ACLs (the Anterior Cruciate Ligament), some of the primary ligaments used in the movement of the knee. The procedure is usually done with an arthroscope and uses either the patient’s own ligaments from elsewhere in the knee or body and in some cases cadaver ligaments (allografts) are used.

Rotator Cuff Repair

The Rotator Cuff is a group of tendons and muscles that give the shoulder its ability to travel throughout a wide range of motion. It is very important to the stability of the shoulder joint. Many activities can cause tears or other injuries to the rotator cuff, which are more common as they grow older. Surgery to remove bone spurs and/or to repair torn or damaged muscles or tendons can be done with an open technique, done with an arthroscope or a combination of both techniques.

Cervical Disc Repair and Fusion, Level 1

The Cervical (Neck) Spinal Fusion is done to alleviate pain in the neck from a degeneration of the discs between the cervical vertebrae. The disc is removed and then an implant or bone grafts are used to stabilize the spinal column at that point. The procedure is done at two levels, 1 and 2.

Lumbar Laminectomy

A Lumbar Laminectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat the effects of spinal stenosis (a compression of the nerves in the spine due to osteoarthritis or other causes). The Lumbar vertebrae are trimmed over nerves in the spine to allow the nerves in the affected area to decompress and results in reduced pain for the patient.

Microdiscectomy

A Microdiscectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat a herniated or ruptured disc, the flesh between the vertebrae in the spine. Sometimes the disc can be repaired and in other cases an implant may be used and the vertebrae may be fused using a wire mesh.
