Also included in your weekly timetable are:

  • Spa treatments
  • Tai Chi (Chi Kung)

  • Personal Training
  • One to One Session Outline

Your weekly one to one sessions form the backbone of your client plan and we present an overview of these sessions to demonstrate how you will progress in your recovery whilst you are at Breathing Space Thailand.

Week 1: Assessment During the first week, the initial assessment is followed by identification of the key issues currently associated with your addiction. You'll explore your motivation to change and the strengths and resources available to be used in your individual treatment plan. You will be encouraged to keep a daily diary of your thoughts and feelings and discuss these at each session.

Week 2: Developing Strategies In the second week you will begin to explore and develop strategies to understand your thinking, emotions and behaviour. You will begin to focus on the steps that will challenge and change the negative behaviour patterns that you have developed.

Week 3: Refining Strategies The third week has a focus on applying behavioural changes in different aspects of your life, including relationships with others, home and work.

Week 4: Preparation for a new life During the final sessions, together with your therapist, you will evaluate your progress; identifying your achievements and ongoing goals. You will also discuss outstanding issues that may be explored further in your aftercare sessions. Arrangements to contact your aftercare therapist will be confirmed. You will then continue with your new drug and alcohol free life!

Therapy Group
Group work helps to complement one to one sessions by sharing your own experience of addiction and gaining valuable insight from others.

Psycho-educational Sessions
These sessions broaden your understanding of addiction and arm you with knowledge and information about recovery that you can apply during your time at Breathing Space Thailand and when you leave and return to everyday life.

Aftercare
Breathing Space Thailand considers the aftercare process to be an integral part of your programme. Success beyond your stay with us will come from maintaining a focus on your recovery.

To remain substance free in your everyday life you will need to apply everything you have learnt at Breathing Space Thailand and then build on this with on-going aftercare therapy.

When you complete your treatment with us, we will ensure that you are placed with a suitably compatible, qualified and experienced therapist to continue the process of change that you have begun at Breathing Space.

Your aftercare is provided for 12 weeks and this cost is included in the Breathing Space Thailand programme fees.

Therapeutic Models Used at Breathing Space Thailand
Treatment models for drug and alcohol addiction

Drug and alcohol treatment at Breathing Space Thailand will enable you to have a new experience in a safe environment that you may not otherwise feel able to achieve by yourself.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Cognitive behavioural psychotherapy (CBT) is a combination of cognitive therapy and behavioural therapy. It is considered to be a here and now type of psychotherapy and avoids the scrutiny of past events. While it may recognise the influence past events may have on thoughts and behaviour it seeks to resolve problems in the present context.

Cognitive behavioural psychotherapy (CBT) can help to solve a wide range of issues such as depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, anger and alcohol drug abuse. It is used as a stand-alone treatment and in conjunction with medication, depending on the type and severity of the condition that is being addressed.

Solution Focused Brief Psychotherapy
Brief therapy exists within a time-limited framework and is solution-based. It uses a number of different approaches aimed at identifying and solving specific issues. Rather than focusing on past problems, its practitioners focus on the present and future, encouraging their clients to work incrementally towards a future goal, in an effort to free themselves from their problem.

This type of therapy is suitable for anybody who feels that they need to address certain issues in their life. It is used extensively to treat a wide range of conditions and problems such as addictions, anger, sleeping difficulties, anxiety, stress and depression. It's also useful for dealing with work-related issues.

Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt Therapy is a here-and-now type of therapy. Therapists encourage the client to identify their feelings or behaviour and consider how these feelings affect their present environment. This self-awareness can then promote healing and personal growth, enabling the client to make decisions in the present context, rather than the past. Self-awareness is a key concept of Gestalt thinking.

Humanistic Therapy
Humanistic Therapy involves a variety of different approaches including Gestalt and Client Centred Therapy. All humanistic therapists whatever their discipline think that a person is unique that they consist of an integrated whole of which harmony and balance is integral and that each person has the right to autonomy and respect much importance is placed on the relationship between the client and counsellor which is seen as an essential component in the realization of positive change.

Is This You or Someone You Know?
The use of alcohol and other drugs is a normal part of most cultures, both in ceremony and as part of everyday social interaction. Many people use alcohol and drugs without developing physical or psychological symptoms. Those who abuse substances may also have underlying mental or physical problems. Substance abuse is continued use that has negative consequences, but without necessarily losing control over the use.

Substance dependence is the loss of control over the use of the substance – which dominates the persons’ life so that their social, work, or psychological functioning is impaired as a result. Dependence can be both physical and psychological. Many people also continue to abuse alcohol and drugs to avoid the symptoms of withdrawal.

Substance tolerance means that increased amounts of the drug are needed to produce the same affect.

Drug or alcohol addiction symptoms and the need for rehab
Substance dependence or addiction is identified when someone is distressed, has impaired behaviour, and 3 or more of the following factors are present over a one month period.

  • Tolerance of the substance, defined by either needing more of the substance or resulting in a reduced effect while using the same amount
  • Symptoms of withdrawal or when the substance is taken to avoid withdrawal
  • The substance is taken in larger amounts or for longer than is intended
  • There is a desire to cut down or control the intake of the substance
  • A large amount of time is spent on activities associated with acquiring the substance, using it, or recovering from its side effects
  • The user withdraws from other activities because of its side effects
  • The user knows they have a physical or psychological problem caused or exacerbated by addiction, but still continues to use
  • The factors that cause addiction and dependency are many. Some people have a genetic tendency to addiction . For example, children of alcoholics are four times more likely to develop problems with alcohol abuse even when raised apart from their drinking parents.

The psychological factors of addiction can include using substances to ‘get high’ or to help cope with physical or emotional pain such as depression and anxiety, or to avoid conflict.

The effects of addiction can include loss of friends and relationship problems, loss of work, being unreliable or unable to work, unemployment, loss of income, neglecting children and legal problems.

In taking a multimodel approach, the Breathing Space Programme aims to work with both the immediate and underlying issues that have resulted in dependency. When a client leaves Breathing Space they will be supported by our structured, 12 week aftercare programme to ensure that they can successfully move forward with their life.

Complementary Therapy During Your Rehab
Alternative therapies to complement your treatment

The Breathing Space addiction treatment programme integrates holistic therapies to complement the biopsychological process. Our complementary therapies have been designed to restore your body to its naturally healthy state and provide a clearer mental focus. These include:

Tai Chi: - Chi Kung
Chi Kung is included in the Breathing Space Programme because it is easy to learn and can very quickly provide benefits to people in early recovery from addiction.

40 million people practice Tai Chi in China alone (60-70 million worldwide). Chi Kung is a wonderful tool for bringing health, peace and vitality into one’s life. It consists of very simple and effective exercises and meditations.

People with addictions are more likely to be susceptible to stress and unhealthy living, this in turn leaves us feeling physically, mentally and emotionally unbalanced. Chi Kung, when practiced regularly, brings a state of peace and calmness to one’s mind and to one’s life, enabling the client to apply themselves to the therapeutic process.

Chi Kung works alongside any form of medication and therapy that you may be receiving. If you take any prescribed medication, it is strongly advised to continue until further advised by a qualified medical professional.

Breathing Space Thailand Testimonials

Client Testimonials Speak For Themselves

Mike G (Los Angeles, US)
I was looking for an addictions rehabilitation centre in Thailand and I came across Breathing Space Thailand. I saw their website and got a real good feeling from the program they offer. I have been to many treatment facilities around the world, including some very well known ones but when I saw the living environment that Breathing Space Thailand were offering I couldn't believe it! My own villa with steam and Jacuzzi - the decision was made!

Simone (London, UK)
When I turned to Breathing Space Thailand for help it was after spending the previous 5 years trying to manage my addiction by myself. I was very attracted to the programme at Breathing Space Thailand due to the fact that there is a maximum of only 5 people at any one time. Also, I'd never come across an addictions treatment centre that has its own spa. Also, they tailored an individualised programme for me, which was something that I really felt I needed in my treatment. I liked the fact that they treated me like a human being and didn't label me as an 'addict' but rather someone who had attempted to find a way of coping with life by using drugs.

J.F. (Germany)
Breathing Space Thailand is exactly what it says on the tin. A safe environment, overseen by professionals, to give you a moment in your life to take a deep breath. I was given the tools that would assist me on my quest to reach my true potential and the foundation to continue my life’s journey with confidence. The breath taking facility, individual attention and five star treatment, go hand in hand with the spiritual beauty of Thailand and her people. If you are lucky enough to be given the opportunity to spend some time at Breathing Space, I would grab it with both hands.

J.B. (USA)
Breathing Space Thailand lives up to its name. Tucked under the mountains of Northern Thailand, Breathing Space was an oasis of recovery, relaxation, one-on-one attention, and daily exercise. It proved to be a beautiful place for regaining focus and getting in-touch with myself after years of substance abuse. The program, staff and facilities are first rate, allowing privacy as well as personalized attention. I benefited from my sessions with the psychologist, yoga instructor and personal trainer, and wish to continue with these practices when I return home.

Thank you Breathing Space, I hope to return again soon, not as an addict, but as an alumni looking for some fresh air and inspiration.
