Overview
Various factors cause a woman to have trouble getting pregnant, and fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization, or IVF, makes it possible for women to have the family they always dreamed of with the help of egg donors. With advanced technology and fertility treatments, parents are able to select the gender of the baby they desire with the help of a doctor selecting embryos of a desired sex.
IVF treatments are rather expensive, and the cost of gender selection runs into the thousands of dollars. When determining if a couple is eligible to go through to gender selection, there are often requirements the parents must meet, including:
Women who wish to undergo IVF with an egg donor typically do so because they are over the age of 40, don’t produce enough quality eggs for pregnancy or run a risk of passing on a genetic disease to their children. Egg donors are usually between the ages of 21 to 29 and have undergone tests, which includes:
Procedure
To prepare for pregnancy, both the egg donor and recipient begin a round of fertility drugs to stimulate the ovaries and develop eggs – both women do it at the same time so cycles become in sync and when the embryos are ready they will be transplanted into the recipient’s uterus.
Once the egg donor’s eggs are ready for retrieval, they are stored into a Petri dish and combined with sperm from the male partner for fertilization. As the embryos develop, fertility specialists test the sample under a microscope to determine gender.
Treatment
After the retrieval of eggs from the donor, they are placed in a laboratory with sperm for three to five days until the eggs become embryos. After fertilization, specialists view the embryos under a microscope to determine the gender and if there are any genetic disorders. A healthy embryo of the desired sex is inserted into the recipient’s uterus by way of a very thin catheter through the cervix.
In an attempt to avoid sets of twins, triplets or multiples, single embryos are often implanted into the uterus – so extra embryos may be frozen to use in the case a pregnancy does not develop. Two weeks after the embryos are transplanted, a pregnancy test is provided to confirm if the embryos are developing properly.
Benefits of IVF with Egg Donation and Gender Selection
For those who cannot have children, an IVF solution is an ideal option. Using healthy donor eggs that are pre-selected for the desired gender, a woman has a 50 percent chance of becoming pregnant. While IVF is successful in many cases, women who are 40 years old or over have a success rate of more than three times higher than if they did traditional IVF using their own eggs. Gender selection allows families with a limited ability having a natural pregnancy ensure they have at least one boy and one girl in the family – or desired gender.
Costs of IVF with Egg Donation and Gender Selection
The cost of IVF is extremely expensive, and is based on a per cycle basis – in some cases, it takes multiple cycles for a pregnancy to occur. IVF with a donor egg costs approximately $15 to $30,000 USD, and gender selection services run an additional $3 to $6,000 USD. The total cost includes donor compensation, which is between $5 and $15,000 USD and a single cycle of IVF (approximately $12,000 USD).
Costs for IVF with egg donation in Mexico are around $10,000 USD – or 50 percent less than costs found in the United States.
Finding Fertility Doctors and Specialists
Obstetricians and gynecologists are trained to implement the initial treatments of infertility using Clomid. Such a physician or fertility specialist should be board certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Couples should find specialists who are a member of endocrinologist organizations or technologies. As such, they have completed medical school programs, followed by four years of residency training in obstetrics and gynecology, and then, two to three years of training in fertility within an approved program that results in board certification.
