Patient Testimonials after Getting Laser Eye Surgery in Pampanga, Philippines

One Mother’s Sweet Journey

Twenty-nine-year-old Carmie Rome C. Baybay was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes when she was pregnant with her first child. What’s it like having Diabetes and a baby? Carmie shares her story.

I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes (GD) when I was two months pregnant. I am glad my condition was diagnosed early, thanks to my obstetrician at The Medical City, Dr. Leslie Canonizado, who recommended glucose tolerance test from the moment my pregnancy was confirmed. Her basis for recommending the test was our strong family history of diabetes.

My glucose numbers weren't too alarming, but still they warranted monitoring and corrective measures to keep them low. Dr. Canonizado referred me to my endocrinologist, Dr. Mary Queen Florencio, who oriented me about the one-stop-shop Diabetes Center of The Medical City. It was convenient for me to go to the center. I just proceeded to the Diabetes Center after every visit to my obstetrician.

At the Diabetes Center, I attended nutrition counseling which was very helpful. Since I was properly educated by my doctors that GD can be effectively managed through dietary changes and exercise, I knew that taking the nutrition counseling seriously would prove to be beneficial to me and my baby.

I initially thought the meal plan provided to me at the Diabetes Center was sort of a starvation diet. But no! It taught and trained me to consume just the right food portions and the appropriate calories for my height and weight. It also considered what nutrients I needed during my first, second, and third trimesters. It was not restrictive and I could get in touch with my nutritionist especially when I had questions regarding the list of alternatives or food substitutes for my diet.

Aside from following the prescribed diet plan, I did some self-paced walking for 30 minutes shortly after dinner. My moderate exercise did not only help lower my blood sugar level, it also kept me physically fit and healthy throughout my pregnancy.

I also needed to monitor my blood sugar three times a day. During my 7th month, I had to take insulin twice a day. Prior to taking insulin, I had counseling at the Diabetes Center. It was of course helpful because I learned a lot about insulin as a diabetes treatment and how to take it.

I must admit that I was already expecting to give birth via C-section. But on July 14, 2016, I gave birth to Carissa Rylie, a healthy baby girl, via normal delivery at The Medical City. This only means my GD was managed effectively. While I am thankful to my doctors and to the Diabetes Center, I knew I also played my role well as a patient and as an expectant mother who only wanted the best for her baby.

That, to me, is patient partnership at work. My healthcare providers were there to take care of me, educate me, and help monitor my condition while I did my part as being co-responsible for my own health. I followed the meal plan as best as I could and monitored my blood sugar as instructed.

I know I have already established the good habits that will help me stay healthy in the future.

Laser Eye Surgery Improves Rugby Player's Game

Twenty-eight-year-old Andrew James Penaflorida Wolff is a Filipino-British member of the Philippine National Rugby Sevens Team, the Philippine Volcanoes. He is a commercial model and won Mr. Philippines 2012. He represented the Philippines in the 2013 Mister World pageant in Kent, England and won first runner-up.

Unknown to many, Andrew was suffering from nearsightedness and double vision caused by Astigmatism. He had tried using contact lenses and eyeglasses over a period of time but to no avail.

“I wanted to find a permanent solution to my eye problems so I looked for options,” Andrew relates.

Having become aware of the benefits of Lasik surgery, Andrew consulted Dr. Ivo John S. Dualan at The Medical City Lasik Center in June 2013. Given Andrew’s circumstances, however, Dr. Dualan recommended PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, instead.

“PRK is a type of laser eye surgery used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Like Lasik, PRK employs a laser to permanently reshape the cornea. However, the procedures differ in how the cornea is accessed. In Lasik surgery, a hinged flap is created in the middle layer of the cornea then folded back, In PRK, the outer surface of the cornea, the epithelium, is removed and discarded. The deeper layers of the cornea then become accessible for reshaping. Because no flap is created, patients are in no risk of suffering from flap complications, which may occur when the eye is hit or poked,” explains Dr. Dualan.

“PRK is thus optimal for patients who participate in contact sports or have occupations that expose them to injury,” he adds.

To prepare for the procedure, Andrew underwent routine preoperative retinal screening which revealed multiple retinal holes in both eyes. A tear or hole in the retina can lead to retinal detachment which if not repaired, can eventually result in loss of vision.

Dr. Robertina Tan, TMC Retina Specialist, theorized that the holes were most likely caused by repeated direct blows to the eyes that Andrew may have sustained over his many years as a rugby player. He immediately underwent Argon laser treatment to secure the holes in his retina so he could then proceed with his PRK.

The PRK procedure was performed two weeks later at the end of July. “It was much quicker than I thought. The preparations took about half an hour, and the actual procedure only lasted 10 minutes,” says Andrew. He experienced very mild discomfort, including sensitivity to light in the first days after surgery. He was also required to take a break from sports for a month after his PRK. It was all worth it in the end. Andrew’s vision was restored to a perfect 20/15.

The first tournament in which Andrew played after his laser eye surgery was in Mumbai, India in October and he definitely noticed the difference. “I was the first to score for the Philippines! I could now see the ball and catch the ball perfectly. I was no longer bothered by double vision so I could be more focused on my game. My overall performance was improved – both in offense and defense. It was a completely different and wonderful experience for me,” declares Andrew.

His new vision has had other benefits as well. Andrew reports, “I am now a better sports commentator because I can see the players and the plays more clearly. I’m also a much safer driver. I see everything perfectly – the beauty of people, the beauty of the world; and it’s just incredible.”

Referring to PRK, Andrew concludes, “This is the best thing I’ve even done for myself. It just hasn’t changed my game. It’s changed my life.”
